Shoot – Winter Gear Guide

As warm summer days wane to crisp autumn evenings; the leaves change, the daylight hours shorten and latest ski/snowboard movie premiers provide the tell tale signs that winter is just around the corner. Some choose to prepare for hibernation indoors while others embrace the opportunity to spend ample time outdoors amidst the cooler weather. You’ll find these winter enthusiasts rummaging through their closets and storage rooms eager to assess the status of their outdoor gear supply. In the event that you’re in the market for some new winter shredding supplies, countless websites and magazines are providing details on the latest and greatest accouterments to assist you in making the most of your winter.

This year’s Action Sports division decided to put out their own Winter Gear Guide. They started out in a somewhat traditional manner by asking their staff of four editors with, “100-plus years of combined lifetime on-snow experience” to choose their favorite 09/10 winter products . But wait, nearly every buyers guide seems to follow that pattern. These guys took it one further with a mission to, “bring the gear to people who’ve never seen it before, to places it’s never been, to do things that were never in the blueprints during their creation.” Sounds pretty intriguing right? Well, let me just say first hand that it was definitely a fun new way to put a spin on the conventional guide.

My long time friend, John Symms, writer for’s Action Sports, called me up and asked if I’d help with the photography for the Boise segment. With only two days of planning time we were quickly on the gun brainstorming an Avant-garde theme that showcased some unique Boise characteristics. John’s witty personality and far reaching mindset brought inspiring ideas drove the direction of the shoot. All in all, I truly feel that we did our best to give outsiders a glimpse into Boise all while showcasing these radical new products. Below you’ll find some screen shots from the site. I hope you enjoy.
